Selected researchers of the fellowship are offered a competitive compensation totaling $44,888 net of income taxes per fellow for an 8-month duration, paid in monthly installments.

About The World Bank Robert S. McNamara (RSM) Fellowship

The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSMFP) is tailored for aspiring development economics researchers from developing countries.

The program provides fellows with an exceptional opportunity to partake in rigorous, policy-relevant research within the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).

Fellows, hosted at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. for 8 months, work under the guidance of researchers in the World Bank’s Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) and Development Research Group departments.

Shanghai Government Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the World Bank Robert S. McNamara (RSM) Fellowship , applicants must:

  • Be nationals of World Bank WBG member countries, with preference given to nationals of developing countries.
  • Be graduates of MA level studies or currently pursuing a PhD in Economics or a related field.
  • Be no more than 35 years of age (by June 30th of the year the fellowship starts).
  • Be available to relocate to Washington, D.C. for the duration of the fellowship.

Research Programs: Tailoring Your Experience

Applicants can choose to be hosted by the Development research department or the Impact evaluation department in the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC).

Eligible Subject Areas: Diverse Fields

Candidates with a background in Economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or other development-related subjects are encouraged to apply.

World Bank member countries are eligible, making this a global initiative. Successful candidates will be hosted at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Selection Criteria

  • The RSMFP employs a thorough review process to identify eligible candidates with innovative and relevant research proposals in the development field.
  • The criteria include the quality of the proposed fellowship (70%) and prospects for a productive career in research post-PhD (30%).

Application Procedure

Applications for the RSMFP cohort are open annually. Interested candidates must submit;

  • a resume,
  • a statement of research interests,
  • contact details for a letter of recommendation, and optionally,
  • a writing sample and code samples.
