John Lewis Young Leaders Program Details

A Comprehensive Overview of the JLYL Program

This one-year fellowship is tailored to equip college students with pivotal skills in community organization and civic participation.

JLYL fellows immerse themselves in human rights activities, both on their campuses and in local communities, culminating in an extensive capstone project.

The program provides a robust support system, including grassroots organizing workshops, individual mentorship from experienced RFK Human Rights staff, financial aid, and access to a rich network of professionals, peers, and alumni in the human rights arena.

John Lewis Young Leaders Program Requirements

Eligibility and Preferences for Prospective Fellows

  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • Enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4-year program.
  • Must be attending a university in the United States.
  • Special consideration for students from HBCUs, HSIs, or HMSIs.
  • Preference for students in the southern and midwestern U.S., and from marginalized communities.

The Ideal JLYL Fellow: A Profile

The program seeks dynamic students with a passion for organizing work and a vision of themselves as future human rights defenders.

Ideal candidates are proactive and courageous in questioning the norm, with a firm commitment to effecting positive change.

A special focus is placed on students from underrepresented backgrounds who face systemic barriers in their journey towards becoming human rights advocates.

Responsibilities of a JLYL Fellow

Fellows in the JLYL program are expected to:

  • Participate in a 3-day retreat featuring organizing workshops.
  • Engage in monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with RFK Human Rights staff.
  • Attend cohort meetings every second Monday of the month.
  • Present a detailed capstone project at the end of the fellowship.

John Lewis Young Leaders Program Benefits and Timeline

  • A $2,000 professional stipend, disbursed in two semesters.
  • Opportunities to address critical social issues.
  • $1,000 for capstone project-related events and activities.
  • Access to resources and support from seasoned community organizers and activists.
  • An all-expenses-paid retreat in summer 2024 (location to be announced).

  • Application Period: December 19, 2023 – March 10, 2024.
  • Announcement of Fellows: April 15, 2024.
  • Fellowship Retreat: June 7-9, 2024 (location TBA).
  • Start of Fellowship: August 15, 2024.
  • Capstone Proposal Submission: September 15, 2024.
  • Monthly Meetings: On the second Monday of each month.
  • End of Fellowship: May 30, 2025.
