The fully funded International PhD studentships cover international tuition fees, a £21,805 stipend per annum as a living allowance, and a £1,000 fund for training and development

The University is pleased to announce a range of International PhD studentships available to start in October 2027.

These awards are given to highly qualified applicants for research within the areas of science, life sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, and within the Henley Business School.

All awards are for up to four years in duration for full-time study and up to six years in duration for part-time study.

Selected awardees receive a comprehensive financial package that removes financial barriers:

  • tuition fees at the International rate
  • a £1,000 per annum training and development allowance
  • for applicants intending to study based at Reading only, a subsistence grant (stipend) broadly in line with the UKRI minimum stipend. The 2026/27 stipend rate is £21,805.

To be considered for the 2027 award, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Applications are invited from students who have applied for a place on a PhD programme at the University of Reading to study based at Reading or off campus/by distance.
  • Applicants wishing to study off-campus/by distance are only eligible for awards covering tuition fees and the training and development allowance; awards to off campus/by-distance applicants do not include a stipend.
  • Applicants are required to have at least a Bachelor’s degree with at least a UK equivalent of a 2:1 minimum.
  • All applicants must also meet the English Language requirements of the University of Reading.

To complete your application, prepare the following documents in advance:

  • A research proposal with a maximum length of 700 words, excluding title and references.
  • Completed the studentship application form
  • Academic Credentials

  • Contact your department: Speak with the postgraduate research administrator in your chosen School or Department first to confirm supervision availability.
  • Apply for admission: Submit your PhD admission application via the online portal. Quote "International Research Studentship Competition" in the scholarships funding section.
  • Complete the studentship form: Fill out the short International PhD Studentship Application Form to register your funding interest with your School.
  • Submit a research proposal: If your School nominates you, you must prepare a short research proposal of up to 700 words for the final panel review by late March 2027
  • Submit your application by the deadline.
