MasterCard Scholarship at University of Pretoria Details
The University of Pretoria (UP) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation has been offering scholarships for high-achieving African students who studied undergraduate and postgraduate levels since January 2014.
The Foundation will be entering into a new phase in January 2024 and it will target academically talented, yet economically disadvantaged young people living with disabilities in Africa; and internally displaced/refugees.
The MasterCard Scholarship will contribute to the transformation of the continent through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values evidenced by their leadership.
Community service and internships are essential components of the Program. The Foundation offers a full scholarship to selected students who have been admitted to study towards a postgraduate degree at UP.Â
University of Pretoria Mastercard Scholarship Requirements
To be eligible to apply for The MasterCard Scholarship Program at University of Pretoria, candidates must meet the stated criteria:
- Candidates should be citizens from Sub-Saharan African country.
- Applicants should come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and demonstrate financial neediness.
- They would need to apply and secure admissions for undergraduate or postgraduate courses at UP.
- Candidates should demonstrate leadership potential and ought to be involved in a giving back project eg. in a community, at school, church etc
- Academic excellence is paramount and students have to maintain a high academic average at all times.
- Candidates need to be first time applicants as first year students in the degree programme.

MasterCard Scholarship at University of Pretoria Benefits
The Program will cover the following throughout the duration of the programme:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation in a UP residence
- Meals
- Books and printed material
- Laptop
- A modest monthly stipend
- Medical aid (Ingwe only)
- Travel costs (one return trip for the duration of the study period)
- Cost of one visa application for the duration of the study period.

Students who apply to the programs at the following faculties are eligible for the scholarship;
- Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
- Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Humanities for entry into the BPolSci (Political Studies or International Studies only)
- Faculty of Law (Undergraduates: SADC, Post Graduates: All African Countries)
- Faculty of Education
- Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology (EBIT)
