The Schuman Traineeship is a professional development programme organised by the European Parliament. Named after Robert Schuman, one of the key figures associated with European integration, the programme gives graduates an opportunity to experience the work of a European Union institution.

Trainees may work in different departments and services, depending on the available vacancies and their academic backgrounds. Areas of work can include law, communication, political affairs, administration, translation, research, information technology and other institutional functions.

The traineeship is designed to help participants apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting while developing an understanding of the European Parliament’s responsibilities, procedures and working environment.

The programme generally lasts five months, and applicants must apply for specific advertised vacancies rather than submitting a spontaneous application.

1. Monthly Grant of Approximately €1,889

Selected trainees receive a monthly grant to support them during the traineeship. The European Parliament’s published information indicates a grant of €1,889 from January 2026, subject to applicable location adjustments.

This financial support can help trainees meet some of their living expenses during the programme. Applicants should nevertheless prepare a realistic budget for accommodation, food, local transport, insurance-related costs where applicable and other personal expenses.

2. €300 Travel Reimbursement

The programme provides a €300 flat-rate travel reimbursement to help cover part of the cost of travelling from the trainee’s home to the place of work.

According to the European Parliament’s traineeship brochure, the reimbursement is paid after the trainee takes up their duties. It is a flat-rate payment, so a travel ticket or receipt is not required to determine the amount.

Applicants should note that this allowance may not cover the full cost of international travel, particularly for participants travelling from outside Europe.

3. Professional Experience in a European Institution

The traineeship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience within the European Parliament. Depending on the assigned position, trainees may contribute to research, communication, administrative activities, policy-related work or other departmental responsibilities.

This experience can strengthen a graduate’s professional profile and help them understand how a major international institution operates.

4. Networking and Professional Development

Trainees can interact with colleagues and professionals working in different areas of the institution. This can help them develop communication, collaboration, research and workplace skills while expanding their professional networks.

Networking opportunities depend on the department, assigned duties and the trainee’s participation in institutional activities.

5. Exposure to European Policymaking

The programme offers insight into the work of the European Parliament, including its legislative, supervisory and budgetary responsibilities.

For graduates interested in international relations, public policy, law, political science, communications, European affairs or public administration, this exposure can be particularly valuable.

6. Opportunities Across Different Professional Fields

Schuman traineeship vacancies may cover a wide range of disciplines. The exact roles available change with each application round, so applicants should review the official vacancy descriptions and select positions that match their qualifications and interests.
