Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Details
The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship is tailored for individuals seeking master’s degrees in fields related to development.
The JJ/WBGSP grants scholarships for 52 Master’s Programs at 27 global universities, emphasizing critical areas like economic policy management and infrastructure management.
Eligibility for a JJ/WBGSP Scholarship in 2025 depends on admission to one of these 52 programs.
Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship Requirements
Specific eligibility criteria are outlined in each call’s Application Guidelines. Generally, applicants of the Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship should:
- Be nationals of World Bank-member developing countries.
- Not possess dual citizenship of any developed country.
- Be medically fit.
- Have a bachelor’s degree (at least 3 years prior to the application deadline).
- Have a minimum of 3 years’ development-related work experience.
After earning their degree, developing country scholars commit to return to their home country to use their new skills and contribute to their countries’ social and economic development.

Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Benefits and Timeline
Scholarship awardees receive:
- Economy class air travel.
- Tuition and basic medical insurance.
- A monthly living expense stipend.
- Scholarship duration covers the graduate program or two years, whichever is shorter.
Programs and Institutions
Subject to available funding, JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 52 Participating Master’s Programs in 27 universities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania and Japan in key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
Selection Criteria
The JJ/WBGSP employs a meticulous selection process:
- Each application is independently reviewed by two assessors.
- The JJ/WBGSP Secretariat selects finalists based on average scores and criteria.
- The JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee finalizes the list of scholarship recipients.
