This BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme allows recent graduates with a keen interest in further studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Africa to gain practical research experience and expand their networks during a three-month attachment at the BIEA in Nairobi, Kenya.
Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend to cover living costs while in Nairobi, accommodation provided by BIEA, and coverage of travel, visa, and insurance costs for the attachment period.

About the BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme
The BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme caters to recent graduates interested in further studies in any discipline within the Humanities and Social Sciences in Africa.
The program provides a platform for participants to gain practical research experience and develop networks during a three-month attachment at the BIEA in Nairobi, Kenya.
Requirements of the BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme
To be eligible for theBIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
- Hold a strong academic record
- Demonstrate an interest in studying/researching Africa
- Exhibit a clear interest in developing their research
- Show significant initiative and ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Be ready to offer enthusiastic assistance for various field projects and subsequent data analysis

Program Components:
During the three-month attachment, graduate attachés will:
- Develop specific research interests in the region
- Gain practical experience as research assistants on various projects
- Receive training in research methods
- Assist with the administration of the BIEA, including website, library, and workshops
- Conduct their own research leading to a plan for a Masters or PhD
- Have the opportunity to take beginner’s Kiswahili classes
BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme Benefits and Timeline
Successful applicants of the BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme will receive;
- a monthly stipend to cover living costs while in Nairobi,

Duration of Programme:
The graduate attachments are three months long, with potential opportunities for extension at the attaché’s expense.
Application Period
Screening Application:
- Opens on Feb. 5th
- Deadline: Feb. 25, 2024.
Selected Applicants Notification:
- Selected applicants notified by March 22, 2024.
- Invited to submit a detailed proposal by April 21, 2024.
Finalists Interview:
- Finalists may be contacted for a Zoom interview.
Application Procedure
How to apply for the BIEA Graduate Attachment Scheme:
To apply, send your CV and Cover Letter to gas@biea.ac.uk. The Cover Letter should detail your research experience and explain how participation in the scheme will contribute to your career development. Additionally, arrange for two academic references to be sent directly to BIEA.
The GAS scheme will run in two cohorts in 2024: June – August and September – November. While applicants can indicate their preferred cohort, it is not guaranteed. The deadline for applications is March 14, 2024.
