The Chinese Government Scholarship is an international education funding programme established to promote educational cooperation, academic exchange and mutual understanding between China and other countries.

The programme enables international students and scholars to study or conduct research at designated Chinese higher education institutions.

The China Scholarship Council administers the scholarship programme in cooperation with Chinese universities and relevant government agencies.

The Chinese Government Scholarship has different application categories. Applicants should understand these routes before beginning their applications.

1. Bilateral Programme – Type A

The Bilateral Programme is based on educational cooperation agreements between the Chinese government and the governments or designated authorities of other countries.

Applications are generally submitted through the applicant’s home-country dispatching authority, such as a government agency, ministry or Chinese diplomatic mission, depending on the country’s arrangements.

This route may support undergraduate, postgraduate and non-degree study, depending on the relevant bilateral agreement.

Applicants should follow the instructions and agency number published by the receiving authority in their country.

2. Chinese University Programme – Type B

The Chinese University Programme allows applicants to apply through participating Chinese universities.

Under this route, students select a university and an eligible academic programme, then submit the required scholarship application through the CSC system and the university’s own admission platform where required.

Each university may have its own application deadline, academic requirements, available programmes and selection procedures.

Applicants interested in master’s and doctoral programmes should check the university’s available research areas and contact potential supervisors where the institution requires it.

3. Other Special Scholarship Programmes

The Chinese Government also supports special scholarship arrangements and academic cooperation programmes.

These may include regional, university-specific or subject-focused opportunities. Their eligibility requirements, funding arrangements and application procedures can differ from the general Bilateral and University Programmes.

Applicants should always read the specific scholarship notice rather than assuming that all CSC opportunities have identical conditions.

The Chinese Government Scholarship offers the following benefits;

  • a waiver of tuition fees for the approved programme.
  • free university accommodation or an accommodation subsidy.
  • a monthly stipend according to your scholarship category (Â¥2,500 – Â¥3,500).
  • comprehensive medical insurance for international students.
