University of Georgia Masters Scholarship Details

University of Georgia Masters Scholarship is opened to M.S. student to study:

  • 1) Characterize fine-scale genetic variation in the PRNP gene of adult and juvenile deer across a CWD prevalence gradient.
  • (2) Assess associations between genetic polymorphisms, infection status, and demographic information, with focus on older individuals which remain CWD-negative.
  • (3) Conduct parentage analyses to examine alleles passed to offspring. This study will utilize information from previous data collected from NW Arkansas, and genetic assays will be completed at UW-Milwaukee, with an opportunity where the student can visit and learn genetic methods at UW.

In addition to research, students will work at the Whitehall Deer Research Facility on the main campus of UGA in Athens, GA. The facility includes a 20-stall barn, a complex of deer handling systems, and fenced outdoor enclosures.

  • The position start date is negotiable, but must begin by August 13, 2026 and funding is available for 2 years with the potential of an additional 0.5 years if awarded a teaching assistantship.
  • The annual stipend of the scholarship is $23,453 per year.

To be eligible for the University of Georgia Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Applicants should have an expressed interest in wildlife biology, white-tailed deer, genetics, and/or disease.

  • have completed a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology and management, Pre-Vet track, or related fields.
  • have a Bachelor’s degree GPA >3.0.
