OpenAI Safety Fellowship 2026 Details
OpenAI Safety Fellowship is a new program for external researchers, engineers, and practitioners to pursue rigorous, high-impact research on the safety and alignment of advanced AI systems.
Priority areas for the fellowship include safety evaluation, ethics, robustness, scalable mitigations, privacy-preserving safetymethods, agentic oversight, and high-severity misuse domains, among others.
Fellows will work closely with OpenAI mentors and engage with a cohort of peers. Workspace will be available in Berkeley alongside other fellows at Constellation(opens in a new window), though fellows may also work remotely.
Fellows are expected to produce a substantial research output by the end of the program, such as a paper, benchmark, or dataset.The program will run from September 14, 2026 through February 5, 2027.
OpenAI Safety Fellowship 2026 Benefits
OpenAI Safety Fellowship 2026 offers:
- Mentors: mentorship will be provided by OpenAI’s safety and alignment teams, based in San Francisco. Potential mentors include: Chloé Bakalar, Micah Carroll, Tom Dupre la Tour, Isak Czeresnia Etinger, Tomek Korbak, Jenny Nitishinskaya, Jolene Parish, Xiangyu Qi, Dylan Sam, Karan Singhal, Jay Wang, Kaiwen Wang, Gabriel Wu, Maja Trebacz, Marcus Williams, and Jasmine Wang
- Time Commitment: Full-time participation expected (40 hrs/week)
- Visa Support: We are able to support fellows through multiple visa paths.
- J-1 ; F-1 / CPT (full-time only) or OPT, and requires DSO approval
- We may be able to support other visa situations. Please elaborate in the appropriate section below.
- Stipend: $3,850 per week
- Compute: Compute will be provided to support projects as needed, up to ~$15,000 per month
- Workspace: Fellows have access to shared workspaces at Constellation (Berkeley). Remote participation is possible, but the Berkeley location is preferred for in-person interaction with mentors

OpenAI Safety Fellowship Requirements
Fellows will work primarily with external infrastructure (e.g. open-source models, public APIs) and will not have internal system access.
You may be a good fit if you:
- Are excited to transition into full-time empirical AI safety research
- Have strong technical fundamentals: you can code well in Python, take ambiguous problems and make concrete progress, and think clearly about hard technical questions
- Thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments and can drive projects forward under uncertainty
- Have background in computer science, social science, cybersecurity, privacy, HCI, and related fields
- Have prior research experience, technical judgment, and execution
You don’t need a PhD, prior ML experience, or published papers. Successful fellows from similar fellowships have had backgrounds in physics, mathematics, computer science, cybersecurity, and other quantitative fields.
