Tulane University Scholarship Details

Tulane University Scholarship seeks a master’s student to undertake a three-year study of fish ecology in Lake Pontchartrain in collaboration with the Rieucau Lab at LUMCON.

Though Louisiana has used artificial reefs to restore fish habitats and enhance fisheries since 1986, much remains unknown about the effectiveness of these interventions, the precise composition of the fish assemblages that use reefs of different ages and construction, and how the presence or absence of the reefs affect the ecological function of their surrounding ecosystems.

This project will investigate those questions with a novel combination of traditional specimen collection and high-resolution imaging sonar-based surveys of the fish assemblages on four artificial reefs.

The approach will not only reveal which fishes use which reefs when but will also test the effectiveness of monitoring reef usage via a non-lethal, low-cost sampling approach.

It will also yield valuable specimens to be archived in Tulane’s Royal D. Suttkus fish collection, the world’s largest collection of preserved post-larval fishes.
