Yale University’s Department of Astronomy offers the Dorrit Hoffleit Undergraduate Astronomy Research Fellowship, a tribute to Dr. E. Dorrit Hoffleit’s remarkable contributions.

Dr. Hoffleit, a distinguished senior research astronomer at Yale, devoted over five decades to the university’s astronomy department.

Additionally, she directed the Maria Mitchell Observatory on Nantucket Island for 20 years, implementing summer programs that influenced many students to pursue astronomy professionally.

Hoffleit’s legacy includes the Bright Star Catalogue and The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes.

In 1988, her extensive service to astronomy was recognized with the George Van Biesbroeck Prize by the American Astronomical Society.

Living to the age of 100, Dr. Hoffleit’s teachings and programs have sparked an enduring passion for astronomy in countless individuals.

Yale University Undergraduate Research Scholarship Benefits and Timeline

Selected fellows of the Yale University Undergraduate Research Scholarship will receive:

  • A bi-weekly stipend of $450.
  • Accommodation within Yale’s historic Residential Colleges.
  • Weekly meal vouchers for 15 meals at the residential colleges.
  • Up to $1000 in travel expense reimbursements.
