The WTO Essay Award aims to encourage in-depth research on trade policy and international trade cooperation while fostering a strong connection between the WTO and the academic community.
The WTO Essay Award promises a prize of CHF 5,000 ($5,700) to the author(s) of the winning essay as well as a fully sponsored trip to Athens to attend the European Trade Study Group (ETSG) meeting in Greece.

WTO Essay Award Requirements
To be eligible for the WTO Essay Award, the paper must:
- Address issues related to trade policy and international trade cooperation.
- Be authored by individuals holding or completing a Ph.D. degree.
- Be submitted by authors under 30 years of age or, if over 30, be no more than two years past a Ph.D. defense.
- For co-authored papers, all authors must meet the age and Ph.D. completion criteria.
- Essays should not exceed 15,000 words.

WTO Essay Award Benefits and Timeline
Prize and Recognition:
The WTO Essay Award offers:
- A prize of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay.
- For co-authored papers, the prize will be equally divided among the authors.
- Official announcement of the winning paper at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG).
- Award ceremony at Athens University in Greece on 12-14 September 2024.
- Funding for the winning author to attend the ETSG meeting.
Timeline for WTO Essay Award:
- Submission deadline for essays: 3 June 2024.
- Shortlisting of eligible papers by the WTO Secretariat: 17 June 2024.
- Final decision by the selection panel: 8 July 2024.
- Only short-listed authors will be notified.
Publication Opportunities:
The winning essay may be published in the WTO Working Paper Series. Authors are encouraged to seek further publication in journals.

While applying for the 2024 WTO Essay Award, you will be required to submit the following documents:
- The essay.
- The CV of the author(s) detailing current affiliation(s), the academic institution awarding the Ph.D., the year (or expected year) of the Ph.D., and the date of birth of the author(s).
