The Teagasc Walsh Scholarship Programme is a fully funded training programme for graduates undertaking PhD and Masters research in agriculture, food, environment, climate, rural development and related disciplines

Scholars are based in Teagasc’s national research centres and partner universities, studying in multidisciplinary teams on research with real-world national and international impact.

The scholarship is applicable to master’s, doctoral.

Walsh Scholarship Programme Details

The Walsh Scholarship Programme is Teagasc’s postgraduate development programme, with some 140 students pursuing PhD programmes at any one time. A budget of €3.65 million per annum is committed to the programme. There are up to 35 new places each year with a grant of €24,000 per annum.

The programme is called Walsh Scholars, to commemorate the late Dr Tom Walsh, first Director of both the Agricultural Research Institute and the National Advisory and Training Service, which were merged to form Teagasc, and a prime mover in developing agricultural and food research in Ireland.

The objective of the Walsh Scholars Programme is to support the training and professional development of Scholars in association with Irish and international universities.

For the 2026/27 academic session, the Walsh Scholarship Programme will accept applications to the following programmes;

Walsh Scholarship Programme Requirements

To be eligible for the Walsh Scholarship Programme applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Hold, or expect to hold, an honours degree in Food Science or a related discipline

  • Demonstrate an interest in functional foods, food processing, or food chemistry

  • Be motivated to undertake laboratory-based experimental research

  • Possess strong organisational skills and the ability to analyse and interpret data

  • Have good written and verbal communication skills

  • Relevant industry or internship experience is desirable

  • All applicants, whose first language is not English, are required to have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of >6.0 or a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test score of >92 (internet based).
  • Must hold at least 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in Food Science, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Business, Environmental Science, Economics, or a related discipline
