The University of Notre Dame’s Doctoral Program in Sustainable Development is a STEM-designated program preparing scholars to tackle critical global challenges. Our interdisciplinary approach combines world-class mentorship, engaged scholarship, and policy-relevant research to address pressing issues like:

  • Environmental governance

Inspired by Catholic social teaching and Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, the program is dedicated to improving human well-being, especially among the most vulnerable, while safeguarding the planet. Selected awardees are entitled to:

  • Mentorship: Work closely with distinguished Keough School faculty with expertise in sustainable development.
  • Interdisciplinary Research: Access resources across nine renowned research centers and institutes.
  • Engaged Scholarship: Gain practical experience through research that informs global policy and practice.
  • Teaching Assistants may lead discussions, grade assignments, and assist with course delivery. Students must serve as a TA for at least two semesters (maximum five).
  • Research Assistants collaborate with faculty on cutting-edge research projects.
  • A 12-month stipend for living expenses.
  • Full tuition scholarship.
  • Health insurance subsidy.
  • Up to $4,000 for conference presentations and professional development.

Students are also required to apply for at least one external grant or fellowship valued at $10,000 by Year 4.

To be considered for the 2027 award, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Applicants should demonstrate a strong academic foundation in relevant fields.
