Each year, up to ten exceptional individuals who fulfill the University of Exeter’s admission criteria for the MEd TESOL Programme for the September 2026 intake will receive these fully funded scholarships.

The Hornby Trust Scholarships cover Full University fees, A monthly stipend to meet accommodation and living costs, UK Visa and National Health Service fees, and return international travel costs.

University of Exeter A.S. Hornby Trust Scholarship Details

The Hornby Education Trust is dedicated to enhancing English language education in low- and middle-income countries.

It proudly presents its Master’s degree scholarships, tailored for English language teachers and professionals with a proven track record and the potential to significantly contribute to English language teaching and learning in their native countries.

The Hornby Trust is delighted to be working with the University of Exeter to deliver these scholarships and all applicants will be jointly considered by the University of Exeter and the Hornby Trust.

Hornby Trust Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the Hornby Trust Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • You must be a resident of, and work in a country, defined as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income according to the OECD DAC list (listed here).
  • You must have a minimum of three years’ full time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after your first degree.
  • You must already hold an undergraduate degree (with grades equivalent to UK upper 2nd class honours or higher).
  • You must not already be a holder of a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or related area.
  • You must not already be a holder of a Master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or related area from a UK university.

How To Apply for 2026 Hornby Trust Scholarship in UK

  • First, complete the University of Exeter’s application form for the MEd TESOL program. This can be found in the ‘Apply Online’ section of the university’s webpage.
  • After obtaining your Exeter student number, proceed to fill out the Hornby Scholarship application form.
  • Remember, your Exeter student number is vital for submitting your scholarship application.
  • The closing date for applications for this award is 9th February 2026.

  • Applicants will be notified if they have been shortlisted to attend an interview no later than 6 March 2026. Interviews will be held between 16-25 March 2026.
