UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026 Details

UNESCO is currently accepting applications and nominations for the 2026 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes.

Applicants will be asked to make submissions related to the 2026 theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity” and take into consideration the specific focuses of the two prizes when applying.

Member States and International Non-Governmental Organizations which maintain official relations with UNESCO are invited to solicit and submit nominations for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes.

UNESCO International Literacy Prize Benefits

  • The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize (3 awards): established in 1989 and supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea. Each award winner receives a medal, a diploma and US$20,000.
  • The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy (3 awards): established in 2005 and supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. Each of the 3 winners receives a medal, a diploma and US$30,000.

UNESCO Literacy Prize Requirements

To be eligible for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Institutions, organizations and individuals promoting literacy through effective and innovative programmes.
  • Programmes must be still in operation and have a proven record of innovative work in the field of literacy for at least 2 years.
  • Programmes that have not been awarded the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes in the past five years.

How To Apply for UNESCO International Literacy Prize

To apply for the UNESCO Literacy Prize, follow the instructions we have outlined below; 

  • Read the information we have provided on this webpage and ensure your eligibility
  • Applications should be submitted to the nominating entities either the National Commission for UNESCO in the programme’s country, or a NGO in official partnership with UNESCO.
  • The agencies are encouraged to submit the nominated individuals’, institutions, and organizations to UNESCO.
  • The nominations will be assessed by an independent International Jury, composed of five experts based on the selection criteria.
  • Based on the recommendations of the International Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will select the finalists to be awarded at the occasion of International Literacy Day.
  • Candidates can submit their applications through the online platform
