The SUSTAIN Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) empowers the next generation of AI scientists to invent, develop and deploy technologies, co-created with growers and agri-food practitioners. 

SUSTAIN facilitates meaningful partnerships between academics and industry, investing in stakeholder-driven innovation.

It is a collaboration between the Universities of Lincoln, Aberdeen, Queen’s Belfast and Strathclyde, and focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to sustainable agri-food.

 

SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training Benefits

Successful applicants for the SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training will gain:

  • Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Up to £31,805* Tax-Free Stipend
  • A Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of £3,000 each year to support travel, training, and consumables costs (up to £12,000 in total)
  • A multidisciplinary research environment

For the 2026 session, the SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training will accept applications to the following programmes;

  • Using AI to Measure CO2 Emissions from Satellite Imagery of Trawler Fleets
  • Improving the Reliability of Cover Crops on UK Soils Through AI-Enabled Monitoring and Decision Support
  • Trustworthy Federated Learning enabled Predictive Analytics for Sustainable Nutrient and Carbon Management in Intensive Livestock Systems

  • MooSocialAI: Vision-based Modelling of Social Interaction, Collective Behaviour, and Welfare Dynamics in Housed Dairy Cattle

For the 2026 round 2 of SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training, the following universities will be participating as collaborators:

  • Universities of Lincoln
  • Universities of Aberdeen

  • Universities of Strathclyde

SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training Requirements

To be eligible for the SUSTAIN Scholarship in UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • A minimum first class or 2:1 Bachelor’s degree or MSc with merit in a relevant subject area. 

  • Non-native English speakers must hold a minimum qualification equivalent to IELTs 6.5. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an English-speaking University will also be considered.

  • Both home and international students must be resident in the UK for the majority of their studies and any time spent overseas should be for the purposes of fieldwork/long-term attachment.
