In this post, scholars World has compiled a list of the productive activities students can engage in during ASUU strike.
ASUU Strike: An Unresolvable Crisis
ASUU Strike has become a regular term to the Nigerian public. Since 1999, the union have embarked on strike for a total of 55 months- more than enough time to obtain a Bachelor’s degree.
Students have now officially added an extra year of ‘ASUU Strike’ to their normal years of study. Four-year courses now take five, five-year courses now take six, and so on.
In order not to wear away your time while the elephants fight dirty on the grass (your future), we will advise that you engage in these 7 productive activities.
7 Productive Activities To Do During ASUU Strike
Not only will these activities keep you busy while you are away from school, they will help shape your life and help prepare you for life after school.
These activities include;
1. Learn a Skill
Taking a skill is one of the best productive activities to do during ASUU strike. If you are able to start and complete one during this period, the strike will become a blessing in disguise for you, I promise.
I tell you, you will be glad that ASUU strike happened if you are able to take up a skill during this period.Â
In his book, Skills Rather Than Degrees, a former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, wrote; “Skills are the bridge that connects education to employment, and equipping individuals with relevant skills is crucial for their career progression.”
Some of the in-demand skills you can take up while strike lingers include;
- Software Development
- Graphics Design
- Content Writing
- Data Analysis
- App Development
- Website Development
- Digital Marketing
You can learn these skills for free on Youtube, Freecodecamp, and several other online platforms.

2. Enrol in Online Courses
Another productive activity to do during ASUU strike is to take up online courses.
Online courses help you gain in-depth knolwedge and a deep understanding of your courses because you are able to;
- learn at your pace.
- learn with visual aids (as against the abstracts you learn in class).
- learn from top universities (like Harvard and MIT) in the world from the comfort of your room.
- interact with students from diverse backgrounds
- use the certificates in your CV and during application for other opportunities.
Where Can I Take Online Courses?
Online courses can be obtained from several platforms such as Udemy, Coursera, Khan Academy, Alison, EdX, and many others.
See our post on top online learning platforms for students.
3. Start a Business
However wierd this may sound, my number 3 on the list of productive activities to do during ASUU strike is to engage in a business venture.
First, I am not asking you to leave school and open a shop in the noisiest market around you. Business have outgrown that level.
What I meant by this (and I stand by it) is to make what you have learned profitable by turning it into a product or service. There are several activities to enegage in to make money while in school.
If you can sew, improve on your sewing by using digital marketing and make money.
If you can code, develop time management software, websites, apps, and monetize them by user subscription, Ad revenue, or sell them to big companies or investors.
Just by reposting mobile phones and laptops (and delivering by dispatch or bus drivers), some students have turned millionaires. Keep procrastinating o! You hear?
4. Apply for Scholarships and Opportunities
This is a wholehearted advice. Please apply for scholarships and several other opportunities.
While the two elephants continue to battle it out, some students have applied for scholarships to study abroad and have resumed.
School takes so much of your time that you hardly even eat a balanced diet. This amidst increased fees of tuition, and hostel fees. Where are you supposed to get the money?
If you are good at writing, submit entries for essay competitions; if you are innovative, there are hackathons available for you to pounce on. You cannot afford to waste time at this stage of your life.

5. Read Books
Readers are leaders. Reading inspires you, influences your thinking, and instills in you, more confidence.
One of the best kept secrets of the world’s most successful people is the fact that they read one book a week. If you cannot do that, read one a month.
Not having enough money to buy is no longer an excuse, there are now E-books in PDF formats, Audiobooks on Amazon, Audiomack, Spotify, and several other streaming platforms.
Read books please, not stories, fiction or drama, they are meant for literature and cannot shape your life. Read self-help, productivity, and personal finance books.
