About Fidel Castro
Fidel Castro, the revolutionary leader and former President of Cuba, played a pivotal role in transforming Cuba’s healthcare system. Under his leadership, Cuba developed a renowned medical education system that emphasizes practical experience and community-oriented healthcare.
The scholarship program, in partnership with Cuba, provides students with the opportunity to benefit from Cuba’s expertise in the medical field.
Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Scholarship Requirements
To be eligible for the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- University entrance Grade 12 with a minimum level 4 pass in subjects including Physical Science, Maths, Biology/Life Sciences, and English.
- South African citizenship and permanent residence in Gauteng, having matriculated in Gauteng.
- Age between 18-30 years.

Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Scholarship Benefits and Timeline
The Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Scholarship offers selected candidates a comprehensive package that covers various aspects of their academic journey:
- Fully-funded tuition fees: The scholarship covers the entire cost of tuition for the medical program in Cuba.
- Living expenses (stipend): Students will receive financial support to cover living expenses for the duration of the scholarship.
- Return economy flight: The scholarship includes a one-time return economy flight to facilitate travel to and from Cuba.
- One-off arrival allowance: A financial allowance is provided to assist with initial settlement in Cuba.
- Research support grant (on request): Scholars have the opportunity to request additional funding for research projects.
Duration of Program:
The scholarship program has a duration of 2 years, allowing students to complete their medical studies in Cuba.
Required Documents
Applicants need to submit the following documents while applying for the 2024 Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Scholarship;
- Two (2) certified copies of the Birth Certificate
- Identification document (applicant and parents/guardians ID)
- National Senior Certificate (Matric)
- Proof of income (Payslips) of both parents or guardians (sworn affidavits for those without proof of income/unemployed)
- Proof of residence validated by the Ward Councillor and Municipality Bill.
Application Procedure
- Before submitting an application, prospective candidates are advised to carefully review the available courses and entry requirements.
- It’s essential to ensure that the chosen course is available at the selected university in Cuba. Applicants are required to submit both a university application and a scholarship application simultaneously, unless stated otherwise.
Interview Process:
- Successful applicants will be contacted for the interview process. If there is no communication within three (3) months after the application deadline, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
Application forms are available online and from Gauteng Department of Health facilities and District Health Services Offices. Completed applications, accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and the required documents, must be hand-delivered to the following address:
