McGill University Mastercard Scholarship Details

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill University is open to talented leaders and changemakers at the graduate (master’s) level, from across Sub-Sharan Africa who aspire to improve and transform nutrition, public health, public policy, and sustainable agriculture sectors across Africa.   

Toward these ends, McGill complements Scholars’ education with a comprehensive support system that includes mentorship, tailored support services, community service opportunities and sustained programming relevant to their personal development.

Scholars also receive guidance and funding for two internships in their home countries during their studies. These internships aim to sustain the Scholars’ connection with their home countries and build a path toward meaningful employment post-graduation.

McGill University Mastercard Scholarship 2027 Requirements

To be eligible for the McGill University Mastercard Scholarship 2027, applicants must:

  • Be admissible to one of the eligible non-thesis programs at McGill University
  • Have never registered for /completed any graduate studies;
  • Be a citizen of, and reside in a Sub Saharan African Country (see list of eligible countries);
  • Have a valid passport and be admissible to Canada as an International Student (requiring a Study Permit). 
  • Those with dual citizenship, asylee, refugee or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK or EU are not eligible.

  • You are welcome to apply even if you do not identify with a Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme priority group (listed below); however, those who identify with one of the following groups will be given precedence in the selection process.
    • Woman 
    • Refugee or Internally Displaced Person
    • Persons with Disabilities
  • Have an exceptional record of service and activity in your school and/or community;
  • Have an intent to return to your country immediately upon the completion of your degree with the goal of transforming your community through social and economic development;
  • Must be less than 35 years old at the time of application.

McGill University Mastercard Scholarship 2027 Benefits and Timeline

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars will receive holistic support which includes:

  • Tuition and functional fees;
  • Laptops, books, and other learning materials;
  • Reasonable accommodation and meals;
  • Medical insurance;
  • Stipend;
  • Transport to and from home;
  • Access to leadership training;
  • Access to entrepreneurial training;
  • Psycho-social support, career counseling, and mentorship;
  • Disability needs will be reasonably catered for.

Required Documents for Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill University

You will be submitting the following while applying for the 2026 U of T Mastercard Foundation Scholarships;

  • completed online application – all applicable sections must be filled out, including contact information, financial information, personal details and responses to essay questions.
  • Financial documents – upload a scanned copy of financial documentation.
  • Transcript â€“ upload a scanned copy of your secondary school transcript and any other academic information.
  • Two references â€“ provide the names and contact details of two individuals who will serve as your referees.

How To Apply for McGill University Mastercard Scholarship in Canada 2027

  1. Determine your eligibility.
  2. Register for and attend an information session to receive the link to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application form. Only applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to submit an application.
  3. Complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form*.
  4. Once your application is pre-screened, provide additional documentation as requested by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program team.
  5. Successfully pre-screened applicants will receive a fee waiver and detailed instructions on how to apply for admission to McGill.

*You must apply to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program first. Only once you have been successfully pre-screened will you be invited to apply to your chosen program of study through the McGill admissions process.

The Program will not accept applications submitted outside the set application process. Applicants who have previously applied to McGill University and deferred their offer of admission will have to reapply through the scholarship process to be considered.
