Michigan State University Masters Scholarship 2026 Details

The Michigan State University is looking to hire a MS Research Assistant in the USGS Michigan Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit through Michigan State University’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.

The selected student will lead a project investigating waterfowl productivity in urban and rural areas of Michigan. Expected responsibilities include collaborating with staff at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to monitor and estimate waterfowl productivity on public and private lands using remote cameras and drones.

The student will be responsible for managing field technicians, collecting and processing large amounts of photo data, recording vegetation in focal areas, and analyzing data in R and GIS software. Results from this research will be used to inform state-wide waterfowl estimates and subsequent management decisions.

Michigan State University Masters Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the Michigan State University Masters Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • have a BS degree in wildlife ecology (or a related field),
  • have the ability to drive field vehicles and work effectively in remote wetland environments, 
  • have experience working with remote cameras and analysis of photo data. 
  • Experience organizing and analyzing large ecological datasets 
  • Experience with statistical programming in R and spatial analyses using GIS software 
  • Familiarity with waterfowl identification and ecology 
  • Training and experience using drones and analyzing drone imagery is preferred but not required.
