CMU Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Details
Carnegie Mellon University-Africa and the Mastercard Foundation have collaborated to empower students with academic excellence potential but without the financial means to fulfill it.
These graduate students pursue Master of Science degrees in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
Cultivating Transformational Leaders
Upon program completion, these scholars become catalysts for change in their communities. Their impact ripples across the continent, fostering meaningful transformation and progress.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU Requirements
To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU, applicants must:
- be facing social and economic barriers and have demonstrated the following attributes:
- Academic talent:Â Scholars value learning and have the drive to complete their education.
- Commitment to giving back:Â Scholars have demonstrated a commitment to improving their communities.
- Potential to lead:Â Scholars will become role models, mentors, and change-makers.
In order to be considered for the Scholars Program, students must first be admitted to one of CMU-Africa’s degree programs.

Available Programmes for CMU Mastercard Scholarship
For the 2025/26 academic session, the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the Carnegie Mellon University will accept applications to the following programmes;
- Master of Science degrees in Information Technology,
- Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering,
- Master of Science in Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU Benefits and Timeline
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars at U of T will receive holistic support which includes:
- Tuition and functional fees;
- Laptops, books, and other learning materials;
- Reasonable accommodation and meals;
- Medical insurance;
- Stipend;
- Transport to and from home;
- Access to leadership training;
- Access to entrepreneurial training;
- Psycho-social support, career counseling, and mentorship;
- Disability needs will be reasonably catered for.
Required Documents for CMU Mastercard Scholarship 2025
You will be submitting the following while applying for the 2025 CMU Mastercard Foundation Scholarships;
- A completed online application – all applicable sections must be filled out, including contact information, financial information, personal details and responses to essay questions.
- Financial documents – upload a scanned copy of financial documentation.
- Transcript – upload a scanned copy of your secondary school transcript and any other academic information.
- References letters– provide the names and contact details of two individuals who will serve as your referees.
- Essays and Personal Statement – Mastercard Foundation will like to know your commitment to social change, how, why and what you intend to do with the programme, your commitment to making changes in the community.

Important Dates
Important dates for applying to CMU-Africa and understanding the admissions decision process
- October 1: All program applications open. Begin your application to the MSIT, MSECE, MSEAI programs
- December 15: Early admission deadline. Submit your application by the early admission deadline of December 15 for CMU-Africa to cover your competency test fees. Learn more about test fees
- January 15: Final application deadline. Any application received after the early admission deadline will only be considered if submitted with valid DET/IELTS/TOEFL.
- January-April: Applications are reviewed. After the final application deadline, all components of applications are reviewed
- April-May: Admissions decisions are shared with applicants. You will receive email communications from the admissions team on the status of your application at every stage. You can also view the status of your application through your application portal.
- July-August: The New Student Foundation Program is held for admitted students. This program supports new students in a successful transition to CMU-Africa
- September:Â The semester begins for admitted students.Â
