The Visionary Origins of Rotary Yoneyama Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship program pays homage to Sir Umekichi Yoneyama, whose vision gave birth to Japan’s first Rotary club.

From humble beginnings, where the call was to “Spare a box of cigarettes a month and donate for scholarships,” this initiative has evolved into a global force.

It has paved the way for more than 20,000 scholars from 131 countries and regions since its inception.

The primary objective of the Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship Program is to foster international understanding and build bridges between students’ home countries and Japan.

A recipient of the Rotary Yoneyama Foundation Scholarship will receive the following,

  • Stipends up to 1,680,000 per year paid monthly;
    • Undergraduates: ¥100,000 per month
    • Master’s students: ¥140,000 per month
    • Doctoral students: ¥140,000 per month
    • Travel expenses in home country and Japan
  • Visa fees
  • Accommodation on the first day in Japan (up to 10,000 yen).
  • The Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship program opens doors to various Rotary Clubs and activities, allowing scholars to broaden their networks and contribute to society.
  • The Yoneyama Alumni Association has 33 groups in Japan and overseas branches in countries like Taiwan, Korea, China, Thailand, Nepal, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

To be considered for the 2027 award, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Age Requirement: Be born after April 2, 1979 (Under 45 years of age as of April 1 of the scholarship year).
  • Enrollment Plans: Be foreign students planning to enroll in Japanese universities or graduate schools overseen by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in April, September, or October 2024.
  • Degree Pursuit: Pursue a degree at Japanese universities or graduate schools. Non-degree students are not eligible.
  • Enthusiasm and Appreciation: Demonstrate enthusiasm for learning, a clear vision for the future, and a profound appreciation of cultural diversity.
  • Effective Communication: Communicate effectively and strive to understand the Yoneyama Scholarship program’s mission.
  • Upon arriving in Japan, scholars are encouraged to engage in meaningful communication in Japanese, enhancing their interaction with the local community as Yoneyama Scholars.

All of the programmes offered by applicant’s chosen university are available for the Rotary Yoneyama Foundation Scholarship provided the applicant satisfy the eligibility requirements.

To complete your application, prepare the following documents in advance:

  • Application Form (mandatory)
  • Copy of the Submitted Admission Application Form (mandatory)
  • Research Plan (mandatory)
    • For Undergraduate Students: “What I want to study at the university or my study plan.”
    • For Graduate Students: “Research plan at the graduate school or the current status of my research.”
  • Scholarship Essay (mandatory)
    • Topic: “Why I chose to study in Japan. My future plan after studying in Japan.”
  • Recommendation Letter (mandatory)
  • Copy of the Acceptance Letter (mandatory, to be submitted by the deadline)
  • Copy of the Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate (Optional)

The step-by-step guide to apply for the Rotary Yoneyama Foundation Scholarship is as follows;

  • Visit the official scholarship portal (Click the link below).
  • Request to be considered as a Rotary Yoneyama scholarship candidate in the APU Online Application System and submit the application to APU by October 7, 2026, for April 2027 Enrollment.
  • Apply directly to the scholarship organization around October 2026. Notify the scholarship organization that the Letter of Recommendation from the desired university will be issued after the application deadline.
  • APU provides a Letter of Recommendation for the selected scholarship candidates after the admissions results notification. 
  • Submit the Letter of Recommendation to the scholarship organization.
  • Submit your application by the deadline.
