Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health Program Details

The Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), based at Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is now accepting applications for the 2027–2028 Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program.

As populations age, the need for leaders equipped to address the growing impact of dementia has never been greater. The Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program brings together experienced professionals from diverse disciplines who are committed to advancing brain health equity through leadership, collaboration, research, and innovation.

Designed for emerging leaders, the fellowship provides education, mentorship, leadership development, and lifelong global connections. Fellows strengthen their expertise while learning alongside clinicians, researchers, artists, public health professionals, policymakers, educators, and advocates from around the world.

Global Brain Health Institute Fellowship Program Benefits

The Global Brain Health Institute Fellowship offers the following benefits;

• Competitively awarded funding opportunities of up to $25,000 through the Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders program support projects aimed at improving brain health outcomes in fellows’ home communities
• Year-long fellowship at either the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the United States or at Trinity College Dublin (Trinity) in Ireland.
• Access to a network of world-class researchers, clinicians, artists, and policy makers for career-duration collaborations.
• Values-based program enriched by the unique aspects and expertise of our two sites.
• Curriculum that develops an equity-informed understanding of brain health and dementia, drawing on clinical, scientific, and humanities expertise.
• Observational and case-based learning in clinical and community settings.
• Leadership development and skills training.
• Intensive mentoring to guide fellows in the development of their projects, career and leadership.
• Academic recognition through Certificate in Equity in Brain Health awarded by UCSF or Trinity.
• Part of the global community of Atlantic Fellows programs to advance fairer, healthier, and more inclusive societies

Duration and Structure for GBHI Fellowship

Atlantic Fellows complete their fellowship year at one of two sites: Trinity College Dublin or the University of California, San Francisco. While both programs share a common mission, values, and commitment to advancing brain health equity, each offers a distinct learning experience shaped by its institutional strengths.

• GBHI at Trinity offers a full-time, in-person fellowship in Dublin, emphasizing a life-course approach to brain health and the social determinants that influence dementia risk throughout life.
• GBHI at UCSF offers a global hybrid fellowship that combines interactive online learning, international in-person workshops, and flexible opportunities to engage with the UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center. Fellows gain exposure to world-leading clinical care, research, and interdisciplinary education while remaining connected to their home institutions and communities

Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health Program Requirements

To be eligible for the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health Program, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

• Willingness and availability to complete the year-long global hybrid fellowship, including required online learning, international in-person workshops, and a residential learning experience at UCSF.
• Proficiency in English.
• Completion of a field-specific terminal degree or equivalent professional training.
• Ability to travel internationally as required.

• A long-term commitment to advancing brain health equity.
• Leadership potential and a collaborative mindset.
• A strong record of professional achievement.
• The ability to work across disciplines and cultures.
• Creative ideas with the potential to improve brain health in their communities.
• A willingness to contribute to and learn from a diverse global fellowship community.

Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health Program 2026 Required Documents

While applying for the GBHI Fellowship 2026, you will be required to submit the following documents;

• Résumé or curriculum vitae
• Statements of purpose describing your interest in the fellowship, leadership experience, and future goals
• Two letters of support
• Applicants invited to the final stage of the selection process may be asked to provide official transcripts.
