European Union LASOMA Scholarship Details

The LASOMA Scholarship (Lasers for Net-Zero Solar Systems Manufacture) is an Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme funded by the European Union in partnership with the African Union.

LaSoMa is a flagship African scholarship and research initiative building capacity for sustainable solar systems component manufacturing through laser-based manufacturing integrated with AI, machine learning, and big data science.

LaSoMa provides comprehensive financial support for PhD candidates pursuing research in laser manufacturing for solar systems components with focus on zero-defect, zero-waste production and climate change mitigation. Mobility duration ranges from 6 to 36 months.

LASOMA Scholarship 2026 Benefits

The LASOMA Scholarship offers the following benefits;

  • 100% tuition fees covered by European Commission funding
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses throughout the programme

Eligible Programmes for LASOMA Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme

The following programmes are eligible for application for  LASOMA Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2026:

  • PhD in Manufacturing, Intelligence Engineering Systems, Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Pentecost University, Ghana).
  • PhD in Mechatronic Engineering with focus on laser manufacturing integration (JKUAT Kenya)
  • PhD in Industrial & Production Engineering, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering (FUTMINNA, Nigeria)
  • PhD in Engineering Physics with focus on solar energy and materials science (FU Lokoja, Nigeria)
  • Industrial traineeship placements for practical workplace experience in laser manufacturing facilities at partner companies.

European Union LASOMA Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the European Union LASOMA Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Must be national and resident of an African country at time of application
  • Target Group 1: Graduate of one of the LaSoMa participating HEIs, OR Target Group 2: Graduate from another African HEI not participating as a beneficiary
  • Recognised Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or related field
  • Proficiency in English (language of instruction)
  • Must not have previously received scholarship under any Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027 project
  • Must commit not to benefit from another EU-funded scholarship scheme (e.g., Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus) during LaSoMa mobility period
  • Research interests must align with LaSoMa focus areas (laser manufacturing, solar systems, climate change)
  • Project targets: 30% women, 10% special needs. Applicants from under-represented groups strongly encouraged

How To Apply for LASOMA Scholarship 2026

To apply for the LASOMA Scholarship 2026, follow the instructions we have outlined below;

  • REQUIRED FIRST STEP: Before applying, you must contact the host institution to confirm you meet admission criteria and receive guidance in preparing your proposal.
  • See contact details for each institution in the sidebar or visit the Partners page.
  • Review the eligibility criteria carefully. Ensure your nationality, academic qualifications, and research interests align with LaSoMa requirements and focus areas.
  • Gather all required documents (see sidebar for full list). Important: Name all files using format: Firstname Lastname Document Type. Example: “Akwa Momany Motivation Letter.pdf”
  • Request Recommendation Letters: Contact two referees (supervisors, employers, or professional colleagues). Referees must send letters directly to: [email protected]
  • Email subject format: LaSoMa Scholarship: Reference for [Your Full Name]
  • Recommendation letters must be dated within 3 months of application deadline.
  • Complete Online Application: click the “Apply for LaSoMa Scholarship” button and complete the comprehensive online application form. Upload all required documents in PDF format as you proceed through the form sections.
  • After submitting, you will receive a unique application reference number. A confirmation email with all submission details will be sent to your registered email address. The project team may contact you if further information is needed.
  • Eligible applications are evaluated (max 70 points).
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview (max 70 points). Decisions are communicated within 4-6 weeks of the application deadline.
  • Post-Selection Requirements. Successful candidates must:
    • Gain formal admission to the host institution
    • Obtain study/entry visa to the host country
    • Sign scholarship agreement
    • Satisfy all institutional study conditions
  • Participate in the LaSoMa Preparatory Graduate School (online soft skills + technical training + face-to-face practicals at Pentecost University, Ghana) and begin your PhD research.
