Edith Cowan University Scholarship Details

The Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Scholarships are designed to support postgraduate students of outstanding research promise undertaking a higher degree by research at ECU.

There are two competitive HDR scholarship rounds opening each year with applications opening in approximately May and September each calendar year. 

The University may identify and prioritise projects that align with the universities research strengths and focus. 

This project-based allocation of HDR scholarships ensures that scholarship allocation to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates aligns with the research strengths, supervision capacity, priorities and objectives of the University.

Current Project Opportunities 2026 HDR Scholarships Mid-Year Round (RTP and ECUHDRS) includes:

Edith Cowan University Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the Edith Cowan University HDR Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Have been made an offer of a place in an ECU Higher Degree by PhD, Integrated PhD research course or Master by Research
  • be enrolled, or have received an unconditional offer to be enrolled, and thereafter continue to be enrolled in an accredited University HDR Course, including meeting all University admission and English proficiency requirements;
  • not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR fees;

You are not eligible to apply for these scholarships if any of the below apply:

  • You have been in receipt of an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) or an Australia Award scholarship within the last two years.
  • If you do not have principal supervisor endorsement to undertake the proposed research project.
  • If your commencement date for the Doctor of Philosophy is after 01/12/2026.
  • If your commencement period for Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) or Masters by Research is after Semester 2, 2026.

How To Apply for HDR Scholarship

To apply for the Edith Cowan University HDR Scholarship, follow the instructions we have outlined below; 

  • Read the information we have provided on this webpage and ensure your eligibility
  • Review the advertised research projects below.
  • Contact the named HDR Supervisor or Project Lead to discuss the advertised projects. You can only be nominated for one project.
  • The HDR Supervisor or Project Lead, in consultation with others, will review and assess applications to identify suitable candidates.
  • If the HDR Supervisor or Project Lead determines you are the suitable candidate, you will receive a confirmation email inviting you to apply. This invitation to apply is confirmation of your scholarship application only.
  • Submit your application via the ECU Online Scholarship Application Portal.
    • The portal for the HDR Scholarships Round (RTP and ECUHDRS) is now OPEN for student applications from 04/05/2026 to 31/05/2026.
