CERN Short Term Internship Program Details

The (European Organization for Nuclear Research) CERN Internship is open to undergraduates and postgraduates in Applied Physics, Engineering or Computing, looking for a practical training period or a place to complete their final project.

Individuals could spend 1 to 6 months at CERN during the course of their studies (Bachelor or Master’s). If your university or institute requires or encourages you to acquire work experience through an internship, imagine doing this at CERN in Geneva.

CERN Short Term Internship Program Benefits

The CERN Short Term Internship Program offers the following benefits;

  • A contract of association from 1 to 6 months.
  • An allowance of 1587 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • A travel allowance.
  • Depending on your personal circumstances, a supplement if you are married and/or have children.
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive Health Insurance scheme (the contribution will be automatically deducted from your allowance).
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month

CERN Short Term Internship Program Requirements

To be eligible for the CERN Short Term Internship Program, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You are a full-time student (Technical/Administrative diploma, Bachelor or Master degree).
  • You are at least 18 years of age.
  • Your main field of study is in one of the following areas: applied physics, computing, mathematics, electricity, electronics, mechanical or civil engineering, instrumentation, materials science, radiation protection, safety and environmental protection, surveying, ultra-high vacuum, scientific communication. Or in administrative fields such as: translation, advanced secretarial work, accounting, legal services, human resources, librarianship, logistics.
  • You will remain a full-time registered student throughout the internship at CERN.
  • You have good working proficiency in English and/ or French.

CERN Short Term Internship Program 2026 Required Documents

While applying for the CERN Short Term Internship Program 2026, you will be required to submit the following documents;

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A copy of your most recent academic transcript giving an overview of your marks (if you download it from your university portal please make sure there is no protection so that we can open it).
  • A reference letter from your University Professor is mandatory. Should you have one from a previous internship you may add this as a second reference.
