- Citizenship: Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country.
- Career Commitment: Commit to completing graduate studies as preparation for a career contributing to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Research Location: Complete the majority of their graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Intention to Work and Live: Demonstrate an intention to work and live in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing their graduate studies.

Borel Global Fellows Program Benefits and Timeline
- The program offers substantial financial support to graduate students, providing up to $25,000 per year for student stipends, or a combination of partial stipends and research funding.
- The funding is available for up to 30 months for Master’s students and up to 42 months for Ph.D. students.
- Additionally, funding for travel by both the student and advisor to and from Africa for research purposes is also made available.
