ACU Commonwealth Routledge Studentship Details

Routledge, the publisher of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, established an annual award to sponsor students undertaking PhD in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. 

The ACU RoundTable Commonwealth Routledge Studentship studentships provide support for research projects on Commonwealth related themes. The studentships are funded by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and the journal’s publisher, Routledge, in association with the ACU.

Proposed research must meet at least one of the following criteria: 

  • Be of relevance to more than one Commonwealth country.
  • Relate to the Commonwealth as a whole or to any Commonwealth-wide institution or organisation.
  • Have a Commonwealth comparative aspect.

ACU Routledge Commonwealth Studentships 2026 Benefits

The ACU Routledge Commonwealth Studentships offers the following benefits;

  • One for PhD students registered at UK universities.
  • One for PhD students registered at ACU member universities in Commonwealth countries other than the UK.  
  • Mentorship

Eligible Programmes for Round Table Commonwealth Studentships

Preference may be given to disciplines usually covered by The Round Table journal, including (but not exclusively):

  • Politics
  • International Relations
  • Economics
  • International History
  • Geography
  • Law
  • Development Studies,
  • and related area of studies.

ACU Commonwealth Routledge Studentship Requirements

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Routledge Studentship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Be a PhD student from UK universities, although not necessarily UK citizens OR.
  • Be a registered PhD students from ACU member universities in Commonwealth counties other than the UK OR
  • Be a Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship alumni who are PhD students at any Commonwealth university outside the UK

ACU Commonwealth Routledge Studentship 2026 Required Documents

While applying for the Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth PhD Studentships 2026, you will be required to submit the following documents;

  • A CV
  • A studentship plan, outlining:The work you plan to carry out during the studentship, in non-technical language
    The likely impact of your studentship work, and how it will advance knowledge in your field and contribute to greater understanding of the Commonwealth
  • Application Form that includes
    • Summary of your proposed research topic for the Routledge/Round Table Studentship awards (100-400 words).
    • Summary of your intended outcomes if you are successful in applying for an award (100-400 words).
    • Summary of the likely impact of your research and why you think it is important (100-400 words).
    • Summary of how the award would benefit your research (100-400 words). 
    • Name of your proposed mentor. Applicants are encouraged to informally approach at least one potential mentor. Please note that if an applicant is successful, they will be required to obtain a letter of support from their mentor to agree to the mentorship before their studentship is confirmed. 
    • The names of two referees (one of your referees should be your current PhD/DPhil supervisor). References will only be taken up after short listing.
