Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship Requirements
To qualify for the Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of an African country and demonstrate that they hail from an economically marginalized or disadvantaged background.
- Residence: Should be ordinarily resident in an African country unless there is evidence of temporary absence for study/work with an intention to return or in cases of displacement.
- Course: Must be applying for a one-year Master’s course at the University of Cambridge.
- Discipline: Prospective Scholars can apply across a wide range of disciplines, with a few exceptions.

Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship Benefits and Timeline
The Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship is a comprehensive award that covers:
- Tuition fees
- Maintenance and living expenses
- Additional allowances for dependent children accompanying the student to Cambridge
- Support for travel to and from the UK, including visa expenses, if needed
- Cohort-wide induction program, which may require early arrival in Cambridge before the course commences

As part of the application process, prospective Scholars are required to provide a supplementary statement showcasing their personal commitment to contributing to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa.

Application Procedure
To apply for the Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship, follow these steps:
- Apply for admission to the University through the course directory by the relevant funding deadline for your chosen course of study (either December 5, 2023, or January 5, 2024 – check the course directory for the specific deadline).
- Indicate your interest in applying for funding during the application process.
- Select the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program when prompted to choose funding bodies.
- Submit a mandatory personal statement highlighting your fit for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program. This statement should emphasize your commitment to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world, explaining how your chosen course of study at Cambridge contributes to this mission.
- Consider your choice of college within the University carefully. Each college offers unique opportunities, so explore the options and make an informed selection.
Important Note: While Master’s applications typically require a £50 application fee, this fee will be automatically waived for applicants of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars program.
Ensure that you submit the scholarship statement to benefit from this automatic waiver. If you do not receive an automatic waiver but meet all the conditions of the Scholars program, you can contact the team at admin@mastercardfoundation.fund.cam.ac.uk for assistance.
