Queen University Belfast Scholarship Details

Queen’s University Belfast is delighted to launch the recruitment process for 20 Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) as part of its Foresighters Doctoral Training Programme.

This offers an exceptional opportunity for future research leaders to access an innovative programme of doctoral training at one of the UK’s leading universities and engage in high impact, inter-disciplinary research with a wide range of non-academic partners.

FORESIGHTERS (Future ORiEnted Skills, Innovation for Governance for Health, Technology, EneRgy, citieS and creativity) offers unique opportunities to build a future research career that tackles complex societal problems.

While researchers will be based in academic units across the university, from engineering, humanities, social science and the arts, they will be working within one of 5 interdisciplinary research themes (HealthTechnologyEnergyFuture Cities, and Creativity).

In addition to advanced training offered by the Thomas Moran Graduate School, FORESIGHTERS ESRs will be trained in skills for anticipating change and using multiple possible futures to stimulate reflection, creativity, resilience and focus for contemporary action.

Queen University Belfast FORESIGHTERS Scholarship 2026 Benefits

The Queen University Belfast FORESIGHTERS Scholarship offers the following benefits;

  • Full tuition fees
  • A monthly Living Allowance to the equivalent of €3655. Eligible ESRs will also be entitled to a monthly Family Allowance of €660. 
  • The 20 positions are therefore initially offered at the following salary rate:
    • Basic Salary without pension contribution: £37,734
    • Basic Salary with pension contribution: £31,185
    • Family allowance (if eligible): £6,600
  • Scholars will have access to a high-quality work environment, including a personal computer, scientific equipment and access to library and shared research facilities.
  • The generous contribution of the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy also provides seperate full coverage of tuition fees.
  • FORESIGHTERS will also provide an individual budget to fund for research and travel expenses (including conference attendance).
  • Appointed candidates will be supported by endorsement and guidance to apply for a Global Talent Visa fees.

  • Creativity

Queen University Belfast Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the Queen University Belfast Scholarship, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • hold a degree that is demonstrably equivalent to a UK Upper Second-Class Honours Bachelor’s, or a Master’s degree.
  • be highly motivated researchers with exceptional potential for Futures research.
  • not hold a doctoral degree on the date of the deadline for applications (29th June 2026).
  • not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the date of the deadline for applications (29th June 2026).
  • have permission to live and work in the United Kingdom before they can commence their contract with MSCA and QUB.

How To Apply for Queen University Belfast FORESIGHTERS Scholarship

To apply for the QUB Graduate Scholarship 2026, follow the instructions we have outlined below; 

  • Read the information we have provided on this webpage and ensure your eligibility
  • Complete the application form and attach all relevant details and documents.
  • The Recruitment Committee will aim to shortlist for interview 6-8 appropriately qualified and motivated applicants.
  • Assessment will take place through an individual online interview.
  • Shortlisted applicants will then be required to prepare a more detailed Research Proposal.
  • Within 2 weeks of the interviews, a meeting of the entire Recruitment Committee will consider and ratify the decisions to select successful candidates.
