TVET Training Program: A Shift from Job Seekers to Job Creators
The Minister described the launch as a major milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which seeks to transform Nigeria’s education system to produce entrepreneurs rather than just job seekers.
“We have returned to the era when technical and vocational education coexists with other forms of learning, restoring hope for millions of Nigerian youths,” Dr. Alausa stated.

TVET Training Program Benefits
Beyond the tuition-free training, the Federal Government has committed to financial incentives and a long-term sustainability plan for the program:
-
Monthly Stipends: Each verified participant receives a monthly stipend of ₦22,500 disbursed directly into their accounts via the Nigerian Educational Loan Fund (NELFUND) technology platform. The stipend is designed to cover upkeep and transportation throughout the training period.
-
Starter Packs and Grants: Graduates will be provided with starter packs tailored to their specific trades (e.g., tools for artisans) to help them immediately launch their small-scale enterprises.
-
Low-Interest Loans: The government is collaborating with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to offer soft, single-digit loans to graduates, ensuring they have the necessary capital to scale their businesses.
-
Funding Sustainability: To ensure the initiative outlives the current administration, President Tinubu has approved that 5% of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)’s annual budget be dedicated to the TVET program.
What Programs are Offered by the TVET Program?
The Ministry of Education, in its bid to align training with critical national economic needs, streamlined the skill focus from an initial 86 trades down to 28 key sectors.
These high-demand trades, which will ensure graduates are globally competitive, include:
-
Fashion and Garment Making
-
Livestock Production and Modern Farming
-
Plumbing and Tiling
-
GSM and other device repair
-
ICT-related skills (Coding, Data Analytics, Cloud Computing)
The curriculum is structured around an 80% practical and 20% theoretical ratio, with the training duration ranging from six to twelve months, depending on the specialization. This hands-on approach is designed to produce immediately deployable and marketable skills.
The Minister also noted that over 960,000 applicants were verified using their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to ensure transparency and prevent fraud in the disbursement of funds to both trainees and the accredited training centres.
The TVET initiative represents a foundational pillar in the government’s strategy to address Nigeria’s massive youth unemployment challenge by transforming the mindset of young people from seeking jobs to creating them.
