The NIMASA Essay Competition will award cash prizes worth up to N2.5 million to successful winners including other awards ranging from laptops and plaques.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Essay competition is organized to commemorate the 2026 World Maritime Day with the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence!”.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, formerly the National Maritime Authority is responsible for regulations related to Nigerian shipping, maritime labor and coastal waters. The agency also undertakes inspections and provides search and rescue services.

The World Maritime Day is celebrated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and by member states globally to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, marine environment, sea farers and other specific aspects of IMO’s work.

To be considered for the 2026 World Maritime Day Essay Competition, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • The essay competition is open to only year 1 and year 2 students of Nigerian tertiary institutions.
  • Participants are required to scan bona fide proof of studentship alongside their essays.
  • Proof should include letters of admission and identity cards of the institution.
  • Essays should be sent to both [email protected] and [email protected].
  • Essays should be a maximum of 1200 words (+ or – 10%) double-spaced in MS word and font size 12
  • Plagiarism will not be accepted.
  • Essays should end with the name, telephone number and email address of the participant.
  • Essays that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.
  • Only successful participants will be contacted.

To complete your application, prepare the following documents in advance:

  • Proof of current studentship.
  • A letter of admission from the institution.
  • A valid student identity card.
  • An essay written on the official competition topic.
  • The essay must be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
  • The essay must be double-spaced.
  • The font size must be 12.
  • The essay must not exceed 1,200 words, with a permitted variation of plus or minus 10%.
  • The essay must be original.
  • Plagiarism is not allowed.
  • Artificial intelligence must not be used to write the essay.
  • The essay must end with the participant’s:
    • Full name
    • Telephone number
    • Email address

Essays that do not follow the guidelines may be disqualified.
