NAI African Scholarship Details
The NAI African Scholarship is open to early career researchers based in Africa, engaged in research within Social Sciences and Humanities, with a contemporary Africa focus.
The aim of the scholarship programme is to offer a 1-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in order to facilitate use of the Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications).
The Nordic Africa Institute Scholarship will also support connection to existing work at the Institute through NAI research hosts. The scholarships are awarded once per year.

NAI African Scholarship Benefits and Timeline
The NAI scholarship encompasses a range of benefits, making it a comprehensive support system for scholars. These include:
- Economy class return airfare.
- Accommodation during the research period.
- Subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD) per day.
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD).
- Access to a dedicated workspace, including a desk computer, at the Institute.
Please note that the subsistence allowance applies only to the days spent in Uppsala.
Additionally, scholars gain access to the specialized library at the Institute, focusing on contemporary Africa in the Social Sciences.
2025 Nordic African Institute Scholarship Requirements
The Nordic African Initiative Scholarship has the following requirements;
- Open to Africans
- Master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research in Social Sciences and Humanities are eligible.
- Applicants must be affiliated with universities or research centers in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland.
Required Documents for NAI African Scholarship 2024
Aspiring scholars need to submit a set of essential documents, including;
- an up-to-date CV,
- a detailed research project outline,
- a concise work plan for the Institute stay, and
- a letter of support from the Head of Department or a senior scholar.
Incomplete applications will not be considered, emphasizing the importance of thorough and accurate submissions.

- Ensure your application is in English and complete, and don’t miss the October 13, 2024 deadline.
Selection Process: Crafting Tomorrow’s Scholars
The selection process ensures fairness and diversity. The duration of the stay ranges from 60 to 90 days, excluding periods of reduced capacity in Nordic academic institutions.
Applicants must carefully plan their visit, avoiding the periods between June 15–August 15 and December 15–January 15.
