University of Rwanda Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Details

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda is a 10-year initiative designed to expand access to quality postgraduate education for academically talented young Africans who face financial barriers to higher education.

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the programme will award 30 fully funded Master’s scholarships to eligible applicants admitted into two-year Master’s programmes at the University of Rwanda.

The scholarship prioritizes students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes while also promoting inclusion by supporting women, refugees, persons with disabilities, and young people from conflict and post-conflict communities.

University of Rwanda Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the University of Rwanda Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Apply for admission into a two-year Master’s programme at the University of Rwanda for the September 2026 intake.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree related to the Master’s programme applied for.
  • Be a Rwandan or another African citizen.
  • Refugees must provide certification from UNHCR, MINEMA, or another recognized authority.
  • Be 40 years or younger (male applicants) or 45 years or younger (female applicants).
  • Demonstrate financial need or disability. Show leadership potential and community engagement.
  • Demonstrate commitment to giving back to their communities.
  • Not be enrolled in another tertiary institution.
  • Continuing University of Rwanda students are not eligible.

University of Rwanda Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2027 Required Documents

While applying for the University of Rwanda Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, you will be required to submit the following documents;

  • Digital Passport Photo (white background)
  • National ID (showing date of birth)
  • Scanned National ID
  • Scanned Passport— International applicants
  • Refugee ID / Supporting Document— Refugee applicants
  • Disability Certificate— Disability category
  • Leadership Certificates

  • Prepare the required documents
  • Apply for admission to an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Rwanda.
  • Visit the Mastercard Foundation Scholars application portal.
  • Complete the online scholarship application.
  • Upload all required documents in PDF format. Please make sure you name each document you will attach with your names and ensure they are saved in PDF format (with size less that 250 kb).
