Gates Millennium Scholars Program Details
The Goal:
The primary aim of the GMS program is twofold: to promote academic excellence and provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need.
This initiative is particularly geared towards African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students.

- Reducing Financial Barriers: The program alleviates financial constraints for students with high academic and leadership promise.
- Increasing Representation: GMS strives to enhance representation in disciplines where underrepresented minority groups are scarce, including computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, and the sciences.

Since its establishment in 1999, the GMS Program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has awarded an impressive $1,214,621,474 in scholarships from 2000-2018.
The average award between 2000-2014 academic years stands at 12,785, with a remarkable 96.2% average first-year undergraduate retention rate among Gates Scholars.
