The lab is seeking 1–2 graduate students for MSc or PhD positions beginning in Fall 2027, while domestic candidates may be able to commence as early as Winter 2027.

The research programme focuses on three integrated areas:

  • Smart by Design: Developing low-carbon, bio-based structural alternatives and advanced bio-composite formulations.
  • Smart by Manufacturing: Integrating artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and multi-sensor processing to improve and automate the characterization of building materials.
  • Smart Throughout Lifetime: Developing resilient infrastructure with long service lives, real-time sensing, performance prediction and life-cycle assessment (LCA).

The lab’s broader research vision is centred on developing materials and technologies that can support a more decarbonized and equitable built environment.

The research environment combines experimental materials research, computational techniques, sensor technologies, machine learning and sustainability assessment.
